The only statue of it's kind - depicting Epictetus in action writing his classic work 'The Enchiridion'

Depicted is that first moment when he wrote down the now famous lines: Some things are in our control and others are not.'

This statuette of Epictetus will personify a reminder to live like one of the greatest Stoics, and serves as a stout testament to the value of virtue.

Epictetus is in some ways the quintessential Stoic. Born in modern day Turkey as a slave, he served in the household of a powerful Roman politician and fellow Stoic. At some point in his life, one of his legs became lame. The cause of his malady is uncertain, but prominent theories are that his leg was broken by his master, or he suffered from arthritis. Based on his Stoic teachings, it seems likely to Epictetus that the cause would have mattered little. What made his leg lame was something from outside his control, and could be treated with indifference.

Despite his low status and physical limitations, Epictetus because one of the most sought after teachers and philosophers in the Roman Empire when he opened his own school in the Greek city of Nicopolis. One account from a later Christian source even goes so far as to say that Epictetus was more famous in his day than Plato was in his time.
